TKM Eco Sanctuary Family Day 2022

Like a walk down memory lane
- Written by Teacher Sherliz
After 2 years of digital Family Day performances, it is finally back physically this year! What was better and more interesting was the presence of game booths with fun activities happening concurrently at the foyer! We have had different themes every year and what I like the most about this year’s is that the children would be performing the favourite songs from all our previous concerts.
A lot of good and fun memories replayed in my head.
‘Antartica, Antartica…’ The Antartica song rang in my head as my memory flashed back to the time when the toddler students performed it way back in year 2018. I was their toddler teacher back then. How the time has flown, and to think that the same batch of toddlers are the K2 graduates this year!

Batches after batches of children joined us over the years and graduated. The number of children and parent-teacher relationships we cultivated has made me feel so grateful and proud to be a teacher. It is my reward to see them grow up healthily and happily, equipped to venture into their futures.

In the beginning...
After a long time without physical events, a sense of excitement dawned on us as we got into planning this year’s Family Day. We want to make it a memorable one for all, but at the same time I was anxious for the children. Will they have stage fright? How can they cope when even I, as an adult, also feel similarly anxious?

With all the blend of nervousness and excitement in the midst of planning, the next thing we knew… it was time for Family Day!
It's finally here...
‘Hello good morning E, good morning G!’ I greeted the parents.
G’s mummy chimed, ‘G says she only slept at 1am last night because she was too excited to dance on stage!’
‘Oh same G, same’. That was the thought in my own head.
We had parents reaching as early as an hour before performances, and that got us all hyped up and encouraged us to do our upmost best for the day!

As someone with double or even multiple roles, me with my “mummy-and-Teacher Sherliz” role, kept thinking of the many months of prepping props, rehearsing dance steps up till the very day waiting and lining up to go on stage. It is definitely not an easy feat for the children.
Oh, and not to mention we still have not won over the Covid battle as well. *fingers crossed*

But guess what? The saying ‘going with the flow’ and believing that the children will adapt at their own time worked miraculously that day.
From all the “Awws” for Baby class performance to the “Wows” for our last K1 performance, all I saw were smiling and happy faces (albeit under the masks), together with the proud faces of teachers and parents seated amongst the audience and at backstage.

The part of the day where I felt most thankful and honoured was when all the little ones, whom I see everyday in school, danced by themselves and stood tall on stage like they had done this before, effortlessly. As I stood by their side as an emcee, the thoughts about their first days of school and how little they were back then, all appeared on my mind.
We had a handful who were a little stage shy, but supportive parents were seen comforting them and stood with them on stage. The children’s confidence shone through, and the applause from the audience only made them feel braver!

Other than parents who were present that day, many grandparents, siblings, uncles and aunties joined in our Family Day. In all my years, this was my first time seeing so many other extended family members who were incredibly supportive of a child!
This was especially special when it was the time to announce our graduates of the year. Grandparents and relatives who went up stage to take family photos radiated familial love and care for each other, and especially for the graduating child.

All in all, we were glad that it was well done, and that everything went smoothly. Thank you to all teachers and staff who poured their strength and effort to create such a wonderful event for our children and families.

Thank you to our children, who felt nervous being onstage but yet mustered up the courage & bravery. Thank you to parents and families who were amazingly supportive throughout our children’s school journey and growth. It takes a village to raise a child. The memories of their families’ involvement, encouragement, love and care will collectively make our children great and whole.
